The Son: "First Son of Texas" Review. Share. Not quite rising above the competition. By Matt Cabral With AMC's Hell on Wheels riding off into the sunset last summer, the network's hoping fans mosey on up to The Son for their next western fix - even giving the show the same Saturday night timeslot. Based on Philipp Meyer's acclaimed novel of the same name, the 1. As Pierce Brosnan - - starring as the titular offspring of Texas - -speechifies in the pilot, “We're entering the modern age.. If anyone picks up a gun now, it's because we're out for quail or deer.”While genre fans shouldn't expect smoking six- shooters or saloon brawls, they will be treated to plenty of simmering family feuds. Unfolding primarily in turn- of- the- century South Texas, The Son focuses on Brosnan's Eli Mc. Cullough, family man, wealthy cattle rancher, and wannabe oil mogul that won't let a little thing like morals stand between him and his drive to jump careers. First Song Sung In SpacePierce Brosnan returns to television on AMC's compelling new western drama series, The Son. Read on for our review of the two-part premiere! Ben Jonson’s “Song to Celia” is known to millions as “Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes.” Jonson was educated at the prestigious Westminster School in London. When not watching Mc. Cullough alternate between ruthless patriarch and flower- picking grandpa, we find him sixty years prior (played by Jacob Lofland), struggling to survive a savage attack and abduction by a Comanche tribe. The series' official synopsis promises a transformation “from good- natured innocent to calculating killer”, suggesting a compelling Walter White- like path for Eli. The pilot, however, does little to reflect this, as we see the scared boy and sinister villain, but not much in between. Still, the flashbacks show promise, primarily because of young Mc. Cullough's exchanges with Toshaway, one of his kinder captors. Played by Fargo: Season 2 scene- stealer Zahn Mc.
Clarnon - - still recognizable beneath war paint and Native American braids - - the character displays more depth and nuance than his more stereotypical tribesman. Fingers crossed this relationship eventually sheds much more light on Mc. Cullough's metamorphosis from clueless frontier lad to meth- maker, er, oil tycoon. Back in 2. 0th century Texas, the older Mc. Cullough mostly drinks, smokes a pipe, and growls through a well- groomed beard. It's all a bit one- note, but still a commanding performance, and watching Brosnan gnaw on some small- screen scenery is never a bad thing. While he doesn't have a ton to do, he's surrounded by brewing squabbles - - big and small - - both within his brood and with a rival, Mexican family whose members are not entirely on board with Texas becoming the 2. Archetypes, like the son (Henry Garret) who wants to do the right thing and his brother (Shane Graham) who's more comfortable following in his father's morally ambiguous footsteps, feel a bit too familiar. For every few stock characters though, there's at least one we want to see more of; a weaselly barkeep who's clearly capable of more nefarious deeds than watering down the whiskey definitely has our interest piqued. Story- lines are similarly hit or miss. There's the requisite love triangle you can see coming from a country mile away, but the aforementioned clash between Mc. Cullough and the Garcia clan has potential. The complex relationship, further complicated by patriarch Pedro (Carlos Bardem) and his son- in- law being friend and foe, respectively, to Mc. Cullough, has an especially interesting fuse lit beneath it by episode's end. Speaking of said fuses, The Son, while talkier than your typical western, is not without its share of brutal violence, drawn pistols, and unlucky folk dangling from the end of ropes. It's also mercifully light on exposition; aside from Mc. Cullough's “good” son being told he and his father “are two very different men” - - a point the episode had previously established with great clarity - - the pilot spends more time setting things up than over- explaining them. Of course, whether or not these planted seeds blossom into an absorbing family saga remains to be seen. The Verdict. The western genre's been on fire in recent years, delivering superb modern- day treatments such as Justified, as well as twisted takes like Westworld. Next to these inspired entries, The Son keeps up about as well as a three- legged horse. That said, Brosnan's strong performance (albeit playing a somewhat shallow character), the implied potential of the flashbacks, and a number of promising plot threads and characters, could see The Son rise above its inconsistent start. The Son premieres wit back- to- back episodes Saturday, April 8th on AMC and Sundance. Full Episode - The Son - First Son of Texas.
